ADELENE N.T. GAW YOUNG PROFESSIONAL’S SERVICE AWARD

The Adelene N.T. Gaw Young Professional’s Award was introduced in 2024 to honour the legacy of Adelene Gaw (1981–2023). Adelene was past Chair of the International Liaison Committee and is remembered for her dedication to service and her commitment to advancing education in radiation safety in Canada and internationally.

The award is presented to a young professional who has demonstrated exemplary service within the Association.  Eligible nominees must:

  1. Be a current CRPA member under the age of 35,
  2. Have been a CRPA member for a minimum of two years,
  3. Not hold a current position on the Board of Directors, and 
  4. Have made demonstrable contributions to a CRPA Committee or Local Organizing Conference Committee.

RICHARD V. OSBORNE FOUNDERS’ AWARD

Originally named the Founders’ Award and first presented to CRPA’s founding president, Richard Osborne (1936-2014), in 1989, the Richard V. Osborne Founders’ Award recognizes those who have made significant contributions to the advancement of the Association.

Eligible nominees must:

  1. Be a current CRPA member or a past member,
  2. Not hold a current position on the Board of Directors, and
  3. Have voluntarily engaged in activities in one or more of the following areas:
    • Enhance the reputation of the Association nationally and internationally,
    • Encourage the participation in Association activities,
    • Advance the role and stature of the Association as an important organization in radiation protection, or
    • Promote the merits of membership in the Association to others who can contribute to, or benefit from the Association’s activities in keeping its objectives.

RAYMOND G. ILSON LEADERSHIP AWARD

The Raymond G. Ilson Leadership Award was introduced in 2016 to honour the memory of CRPA Founders’ Award recipient and past president, Raymond Ilson (1947-2015).

Eligible nominees must:

  1.  Be a current CRPA member,
  2. Not hold a current position on the CRPA Board of Directors,
  3. Have demonstrated or show promise of leadership in the radiation protection profession or in the Association, and
  4. Have gone above and beyond contributing to the profession.

MERITORIOUS SERVICE AWARD

First presented in 2000, the Meritorious Service Award recognizes significant contributions to either the Association or the radiation protection profession in general. 

Eligible nominees must:

  1. Be a current CRPA member or a past member, and
  2. Not hold a current position on the Board of Directors.

DISTINGUISHED ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

First introduced in 1988, the Distinguished Achievement Award is presented for outstanding contributions in the field of radiation protection.  

Eligible nominees must:

  1. Be a current CRPA member or a past member 
  2. Not hold a current position on the Board of Directors, and  
  3. Have received recognition from peers either nationally or internationally for accomplishments of major significance to the knowledge, practice, or advancement of the radiation protection profession.

HONORARY MEMBERSHIP NOMINATIONS

Honorary Members are individuals who have been approved by the Membership as persons worthy of a lifetime membership in the Association.  Honorary Members pay no membership dues and are afforded the same privileges and voting rights as a Full member.

Eligible nominees must have been a Full member for at least 10 consecutive years. 

Nominations are motioned for approval by voting members at the Annual General Meeting. 

NOMINATIONS

At least two current Full members of the Association must nominate a given individual for an Award or Honorary Membership.  Award nominations are subject to approval by the Board of Directors.

Excluding nominations for Honorary Membership, nominees may receive only one award per year. If an individual is nominated for more than one award, the Board will determine which nomination is most appropriate. 

Award winners are announced at the Annual Banquet and Awards Ceremony at the CRPA conference, or as determined by the Board of Directors.  

SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION

A short biographical resume of the candidate’s career and reasons why the candidate is being nominated must be provided. Reports, references etc., should be submitted as supporting material for the candidate’s nomination in line with the objectives of the award.

The members pictured below have been awarded Lifetime Honorary Memberships with the CRPA for their long-standing service, commitment and dedication to the Association.

Dr. Jing Chen

Dr. Chen has been an active CRPA member since 2001. She served on the International Liaison Committee from 2018 to 2022 and, over the years, promoted CRPA internationally and facilitated several partnerships and collaborations with national and international organizations, including the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals (BCRSP) and the Health Physics Society (HPS). Dr. Chen was awarded an Honorary Membership at the 2025 AGM.

Gary Hughes

Gary joined CRPA in 2002, served on the Elections Committee (now the Nominations Committee), and was a member of the Local Organizing Committees for the Edmonton conferences. Gary was awarded an Honorary Membership at the 2024 AGM.




Sunil Choubal

Sunil is one of the original founding members of CRPA, has been a member since 1979, served as President from 2006-2007 and has been the CRPA Archivist since 2010. Sunil was awarded an Honorary Membership in 2016.





Dr. Gary H. Kramer

Gary is one of the original founding members of CRPA, has been a member since 1979 and served as President from 1997-1998 and 2012-2013. Gary was awarded an Honorary Membership in 2010.

Previous Award Winners
