The Radiation Safety Institute of Canada (RSIC), in collaboration with the Canadian Radiation Protection Association (CRPA) is honoured to announce the launch of a scholarship in memory of Delmar McCormack (Mac) Smyth (1923 – 2011). The scholarship will mark a pivotal moment in the history of the Radiation Safety Institute of Canada – the 45th anniversary of the Institute and the 35th anniversary of the establishment of Fergal Nolan National Laboratories in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Delmar was one of the founding forces behind the Radiation Safety Institute of Canada and served as the Founding Chair and later Honorary Life Chair of the Institute’s Board of Directors. A scholar, educator, public servant, and visionary leader, Mac dedicated his life to learning, public service, and the pursuit of a safer, more peaceful world. His work in government, academia, and community leadership helped shape institutions that continue to serve Canadians today.

The scholarship is designed to support students who are pursuing studies related to physics, radiation safety and radiation protection, and who demonstrate the curiosity, rigour, and commitment to safety that defined Mac Smyth’s life and work. 

The scholarship is funded by RSIC and administered by CRPA.  The number and value of scholarships will be determined annually based on available funding.

2027 SCHOLARSHIP

Information about the 2027 Scholarship will be announced in late 2026.

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be enrolled full-time in a  Canadian post-secondary institution and have completed at least one academic semester by the time the award is announced (March 1st 2026).
  • Be pursuing a degree or  diploma in a program that has implications for radiation safety, such as radiation science, health physics, medical physics, nuclear technology, nuclear engineering, occupational health and safety, etc.
  • Maintain a minimum academic performance average of 75%. 

Applicants are required to submit:

  • A typed essay (in English or French) of between 500 and 750 words  on the theme: “Why radiation safety matters in today’s world, and how I hope to contribute to this field”.
    • Applicants are encouraged to reflect on how their goals align with the mission of the Radiation Safety Institute of Canada and the legacy of leaders like Delmar (Mac) Smyth, who worked to build safer workplaces, stronger institutions, and a more peaceful world.
    • Note that references and citations, if included,  do not count toward the total word count.
  • Official  documentation verifying enrollment and academic standing if selected as a finalist or winner.

Submissions for the 2026 Scholarship are now closed.  Requirements for the 2027 Scholarship will be announced in late 2026.

  1. Application Verification – All information and documentation submitted are subject to verification by the Canadian Radiation Protection Association. Falsification, misrepresentation, or failure to meet eligibility criteria will result in disqualification.
  2. Award Disbursement – Scholarship funds will be disbursed directly to the recipient or their educational institution at the discretion of the Association. Awards are non-transferable and non-deferrable.
  3. Number and Value of Awards – The number and dollar value of scholarships to be awarded each year are subject to available funding and may be reduced, withheld, or canceled without notice.
  4. Travel Support – Complimentary hotel accommodation (maximum of three nights) and conference registration (including banquet) will be provided by the Canadian Radiation Protection Association to the winners if they choose to attend the conference.  Travel expenses,  within reasonable limits as determined by the Canadian Radiation Protection Association, may be provided to the winners if funds are available. 
  5. Privacy and Consent – By submitting an application, applicants consent to the collection, use, and disclosure of personal information for the purpose of administering and promoting the scholarship program, in accordance with applicable privacy laws.
  6. Publication Rights – The Association reserves the right to publish the names, photos, essays, and institutional affiliations of scholarship recipients for promotional or reporting purposes without further compensation through the CRPA Bulletin or website.
  7. Decisions Final – All decisions made by the Association’s scholarship selection committee are final and binding, and no appeals will be accepted.
  8. Right to Modify or Terminate – The Canadian Radiation Protection Association and Radiation Safety Institute of Canada reserve the right to amend, suspend, or terminate the scholarship program at any time without prior notice.
  9. Compliance – Applicants are responsible for ensuring compliance with any institutional, tax, or financial aid reporting requirements applicable to the receipt of a scholarship.
