Delmar McCormack Smyth Scholarship

Starting in 2026, the Canadian Radiation Protection Association (CRPA) is pleased to partner with the Radiation Safety Institute of Canada to administer the Delmar McCormack Smyth Scholarship. 

Founded in 1980, the Radiation Safety Institute of Canada is an independent, national organization dedicated to promoting and advancing radiation safety in the workplace, in the environment and in the community.  Delmar McCormack Smyth, MA, PhilM, PhD (1922-2011) was the Founding Chair and an Honorary Life Chair of the Institute.

The number and amount of scholarships to be awarded each year are subject to available funding.

Applicants will be required to submit a minimum 750-word essay on a different theme each year, along with documentation confirming their enrollment.

Finalists will be contacted between February and March 2026 for eligibility verification, and winners will be announced in March 2026.

Scholarship recipients will be encouraged to attend the annual CRPA Conference.  Full conference registration (including banquet), three nights’ hotel accommodation and travel expenses will be provided (subject to reasonable cost limits and availability).  Note that the CRPA 2026 Annual Conference is a joint venture with the Canadian Association of Radon Scientists and Technologists (CARST) and will take place in Saskatoon, SK during the week of May 27-30, 2026 (CARST-CRPA Symposium on Radon and Radiation Protection).

To be eligible, applicants must:

  1. Be enrolled full-time in a recognized Canadian post-secondary institution in a program related to the field of Radiation Safety at the time of award (March 1st 2026).
  2. Have completed at least one academic semester as of March 1st 2026 and achieved a minimum cumulative average of 75% (or equivalent GPA).
  3. Be able to provide official documentation verifying enrollment and academic standing if selected as a finalist or winner.
  1. Application Verification – All information and documentation submitted are subject to verification by the Canadian Radiation Protection Association. Falsification, misrepresentation, or failure to meet eligibility criteria will result in disqualification.
  2. Award Disbursement – Scholarship funds will be disbursed directly to the recipient or their educational institution at the discretion of the Association. Awards are non-transferable and non-deferrable.
  3. Number and Value of Awards – The number and amount of scholarships to be awarded each year are subject to available funding and may be reduced, withheld, or canceled without notice.
  4. Travel Support – Complimentary airfare, accommodation, and conference registration will be provided within reasonable limits as determined by the Canadian Radiation Protection Association.
  5. Privacy and Consent – By submitting an application, applicants consent to the collection, use, and disclosure of personal information for the purpose of administering and promoting the scholarship program, in accordance with applicable privacy laws.
  6. Publication Rights – The Association reserves the right to publish the names, photos, essays, and institutional affiliations of scholarship recipients for promotional or reporting purposes without further compensation through the CRPA Bulletin or Website.
  7. Decisions Final – All decisions made by the Association’s scholarship selection committee are final and binding, and no appeals will be accepted.
  8. Right to Modify or Terminate – The Canadian Radiation Protection Association and Radiation Safety Institute of Canada reserve the right to amend, suspend, or terminate the scholarship program at any time without prior notice.
  9. Compliance – Applicants are responsible for ensuring compliance with any institutional, tax, or financial aid reporting requirements applicable to the receipt of a scholarship.
  1. Submit a typed essay of no fewer than 750 words on the theme: “Breaking Barriers: Integrating Radiation Safety in Everyday Life”.
  2. Complete and submit the application form below, and all required materials.
